Sandy Beachin paikalla oli sata vuotta sitten Treadwellin kultakaivos. Entisajan kaivoksesta on jäljellä enää osa vanhasta suolavesipumpusta, ränsistyneitä paaluja ja rakennuksia sekä tietenkin kaivoksista louhittua hiekkaa. Joskus rannalta voi löytää myös vanhoja astioita ja rautajätettä. Kaivos oli aikanaan maailman suurin maanalainen kultakaivos joka työllisti yli 2000 henkeä.

One hundred years ago, where Sandy Beach lies today, used to house the Treadwell goldmine. What’s left of the old mine is part of the pump house, some ramshackled pilings and buildings and of course the left over mine tailings. Sometimes you can also find old pottery and iron waste on the beach. The mine used to be the largest underground gold mine in the world, employing over 2000 people.

Kesällä grillikatoksessa on harva se ilta pieniä tapahtumia ja illanviettoja. Polkua seuraamalla löytää myös “Glory Holen”, joka on vedessä oleva jättiläismäinen kuoppa vuonna 1917 romahtaneen kaivoksen jäljiltä.

This city run recreation area’s real name boasts some fancy Finnish roots – Savikko Park. From the picnic shelters and the children’s play area, you can follow a guided tour to visit some more of the historic grounds of the mine. During the summer the picnic shelter houses some event or get-together nearly every night. By following along the path you’ll also get to the “Glory Hole”, which is a giant hole in the water where the mine collapsed in 1917.

Siinä kerrotaan, että suomalaissyntyisellä kalastaja ja maahanmuuttaja Wilhelm Rovalla oli tällä paikalla asuntoviljelystila vuonna 1915. Sittemmin alue on lahjoitettu kaupungille näköalapaikaksi, eikä siihen onneksi saa rakentaa mitään.

Antother Finnish name can be found on the sign on the railing of the below Homestead Park. It explains that this property was the homestead claim of a Finnish immigrant and fisherman Wilhelm Rova in 1915. Later on, the area has been donated to the city to serve as a scenic lookout and fortunately it cannot be built on.
