Palataanpa taas ajassa taaksepäin vuoteen 2006, jolloin matkustin Vappua karkuun New Yorkiin. Jotenkin sattuman kaupalla sain halvimmat Finskin lennot ikinä, ja suhautimme äitini kanssa äiti-tytär reissulle hintaan 295 € per lärvi. Muutenkin matkustimme budjetilla, sillä muistaakseni maksoimme viikosta hostellissa Upper West Sidella 350 dollaria. Viikkoon mahtui aurinkoa, kävelyä, ostoksia ja ihanaa ruokailua. Etäisyydet olivat käsittämättömän pitkiä, mutta metromatkailu oli myös elämyksen arvoista.

Let’s go back in time to the year 2006, when I traveled to New York, to escape the Finnish May Day celebrations. Somehow by incredible chance I managed to get the cheapest Finnair tickets ever – so me and my mother flew over for 295 € each. We were traveling on a budget anyways, since I think a week at the hostel on the Upper West Side cost us 350 dollars. Our week was filled with sun, walking, shopping and fabulous food. The distances were incredibly long, but traveling on the subway was also an experience.

Mielestäni juuri Upper West Side oli mitä parhain paikka tutustua paikalliseen väestöön samalla kuin tarkastelimme alueen kattavaa ravintolatarjontaa. Ystävystyimmekin lähidinerissa toistuvilla aamiaisilla kahteen rouvaan, jotka kutsuivat meidät jopa mukaan Baptistikirkon jumalanpalvelukseen, jossa sitten kävimme laulamassa mukana kuoron tahtiin. Tässä nyt joitakin säilyneitä kuvia, joita yritin hieman fiksata Lightroomissa – nämä on nimittäin otettu jollain jäätävällä vanhalla pokkarilla. Mitäs sanotte, tuleeko näistä silti mieleen “a New York state of mind”?

I think the Upper West Side was one of the best places to meet locals, especially as we checked out the abundance of restaurants in the area. We became friends with two ladies at the local diner where we ate breakfast on several occasions. They even invited us to go along to a Baptist church, where we then went to sing along with the choir. Here are some pics from back then – I tried to brush them up a bit in Lightroom, as they were taken with some ridiculously old compact camera.
