Täällä lasketaan päiviä Cali-matkan alkuun ja onnekseni voin todeta, että niitä on jäljellä enää tasan 22. Tämän kertaiseksi Travel Thursdayksi löysin kasan ig-kuvia Los Angelesin Downtownista edelliseltä reissulta. Ja samalla vähän yhteenvetoa siitä mitä kaikkea Losin mittapuulla erilaisesta Downtownista löytyy.
I’m still counting down the days to our Cali-trip and today I can say that only 22 remain. For this week’s Travel Thursday I found a stack of instagram pics from Downtown LA from my previous visit. Here is a quick review of what you can find in the un-Los Angeles-like Downtown area.
Downtownin kupeessa Chinatownin kulmalla sijaitsee ihana omintakeinen Philippe’s. Philippe’sin jonot ovat legendaariset ja tiskiltä tilataan french dip -leipiä, sitruunamarenkipiirakkaa ja violetiksi värjättyjä kananmunia. Kassalla myydään myös parhaimpia farkkukankaasta tehtyjä kangaskasseja, ja sellainen kulkee edelleen mukanani monta kertaa viikossa.
Close to Downtown, on the corner of Chinatown you will find the wonderfully quirky Philippe’s, which boasts legendary long lines to the counter where you’ll order your french dip sandwich, lemon meringue pie and purple dyed eggs. The cashier also sells the best tote bags ever, made from thick denim and one of them still travels with me many times a week.
Union Station on itsessään hieno nähtävyys ja kadun toisella puolella voi ihastella käsitöitä ja turistikamaa pienen pienellä pätkällä Meksikoa, jota myös Olvera Streetiksi kutsutaan. Pilvenpiirtäjät pilkottavat jo lähistöllä.
Union Station is in itself a great sight and by crossing the street you can admire arts, crafts and souvenirs on a small stretch of Mexico, which they also call Olvera Street. The skyscrapers can already be spotted close by.
Vain kymmenisen vuotta vanha hopeisen aaltoileva Walt Disney Concert Hall on erittäin näyttävä rakennus ja sen huomaa jo kaukaa auringossa välkehtivästä pinnasta. Takapihalla voi käydä kastelemassa käsiään Lillian Disney Memorial Fountain -suihkulähteessä, jonka rakennuksen arkkitehti Frank Gehry on taiteillut Lilly Disneyn muistolle. Lähistöllä voi myös käydä tutustumasssa 500 Days of Summer -elokuvasta tuttuun Angels Knoll Parkiin ja matkustaa ylös tai alas pienellä Angels Flight -funikulaarilla. Alaspäin mennessä ihastuttava Grand Central Market on heti kadun toisella puolella. Itse tykkään ostaa sieltä bobaa, eli bubble teetä. Matkaseura valitsi tällä kertaa kirkkaanväristä jäätelöä.
The merely 10-year old Walt Disney Concert Hall is a very attractive building with its ondulating silvery shapes and can be spotted from afar by its surface gleaming in the sun. In the back yard you can get your hands wet in the Lillian Disney Memorial Fountain, which the building’s architect Frank Gehry has sculpted in the memory of Lilly Disney. Close by you can also familiarize yourself with Angels Knoll Park, made famous by the movie 500 Days of Summer and ride up or down with the tiny Angels Flight -funicular. When going downward, the delightful Grand Central Market is right across the street. I like to buy boba, or bubble tea there. My travel companion opted for some brightly colored ice cream.
Jos vielä mielii nähdä muita elokuvista tuttuja paikkoja voi käydä kääntymässä Bradbury Buildingissä, jossa on kuvattu lukuisia pätkiä. Downtownissa ehkä parasta on se, että Losin mahdottomuudelta tuntuvassa liikennesumassa voi kerrankin kävellä joka paikkaan. Varaa mukaan hyvät kengät sillä alue on mäkistä ja ilma saattaa olla kuumaakin kuumempi. Nähdään pian Downtown!

If you still want to see other famous spots from movies, you can have a turn at the Bradbury Building, where they’ve filmed countless reels. The best part about Downtown is probably that in the seemingly endless mass of LA traffic you can for once walk everywhere. Bring a comfy pair of shoes, because the area is full of hills and the weather can be hotter than hot. See you soon Downtown!

You shouldn't be intimidated! I think the most scared I've ever been while traveling was in Athens, Greece. LA has always treated me well. 🙂

Tänään lähtöön tasan 3 viikkoa. Ei voisi tulla parempaan saumaan… kaksi vuotta (jo!) viime kerrasta ja ikävä on takaisin. 🙂

I have not had the opportunity to explore downtown LA yet (I only pass through on connecting flights) and maybe now there might be reason to spend a day in the area.I want to see what all the fuss is about at Philippe's.
