Nopeasti nukutun yön jälkeen palasimme Tusayanista kanjonille viiden jälkeen aamulla. Pienen pohdinnan jälkeen jäimme Visitor Centerin kupeeseen Mather Pointille odottamaan auringonnousua. Vierailijoita oli kertynyt aamuvarhain jo tusinoittain. Heti auringonnousun jälkeen kanjonin pohjalta nousi sankka sumu joka peitti liki koko näkyvyyden. Jäimme seuraamaan tilannetta.

After a quick night’s sleep we returned to Grand Canyon after 5 AM. After pondering a bit, we stayed close to the Visitor Center at Mather Point to wait for sunrise. There were already dozens of visitors this early on. Right after sunrise a thick fog arose from the bottom of the canyon, which blocked nearly all of our view. We decided to stay to watch how it progressed.

Heti sumun hälvettyä jatkoimme matkaa bussilla Grand Canyon Villagesta kohti Abyssiä ja Hopi Pointia, josta samoilimme pikkuhiljaa takaisin pitkin kanjonin reunaa.

After the fog had disappeared, we continued by bus from the Grand Canyon Village towards The Abyss and Hopi Point, and slowly made our way back along the edge.

Kanjonilta palasimme hotellin erinomaiselle aamiaiselle, kävimme suihkussa ja lähdimme jatkamaan matkaa kohti Nevadaa, jossa pyörähdimme pikaisesti Pendletonin Outletissa. Kasinot olivat heti hollilla ylitettyämme sillan Arizonan puolelta.

We returned to enjoy the hotel’s excellent breakfast, showered and continued our journey towards Nevada, where we made a brief stop at the Pendleton Outlet. The casinos were aplenty immediately after crossing the bridge over from Arizona.

Nevadasta ajoimme erämaan halki kohti Amboyta, hylättyä huoltoasemaa sekä kuuluisaa Route 66:n pysähdyspaikkaa Roy’s Caféta. Kuumuus oli pakahduttavaa ja piti äkkiä päästä takaisin ilmastoituun autoon.

From Nevada we drove through the desert towards Amboy, an abandoned gas station and the famous Roy’s Café on Route 66. The heat was oppressive and we quickly had to get back in the air conditioned car.

Ajoimme auringonlasku horisontissa kohti Joshua Treen kansallispuistoa, johon ehdimme juuri ja juuri ihailemaan auringon värittämää violetinkeltaista taivasta erikoisten joosuanpuiden yllä.

We drove with the sunset on the horizon towards Joshua Tree National Park, where we barely made it to watch the sun paint the sky purple and yellow above the eccentric Joshua trees.

Illan kruunasi Sonic America’s Drive Inissä syöty hampurilaisateria pirtelöineen, sillä sen tarjoili suoraan auton ikkunalle poika rullaluistimilla. Aivan kuin elokuvissa! Vihdoin perillä Palm Springsissä kävimme vielä yöuinnilla tähtitaivaan alla. Aamulla herätessämme Hotel Saguarosta oli parvekkeella vastassa tämä näky. Sydämeni meinasi miltei pysähtyä. Mikä värien ilotulitus!

The highlight of our evening was our dinner of burgers, tater tots and shakes at Sonic America’s Drive In, since it was served directly to our car by a guy on rollerskates. Just like in the movies! Once in Palm Springs, we still took a dip in the pool under the stars. As we awoke at the Hotel Saguaro the next morning we were met by this view from the balcony. My heart almost stopped. What an explosion of colors!
