Moni on kysellyt minulta järkevintä tapaa ja aikaa matkustaa Grand Canyonille. Reittejä on useita, riippuen siitä mistä lähtee. Route 66, Sedona, Flagstaff ja Phoenix ovat ehkä lähimpiä nähtävyyksiä joiden varrelta on helppo koukata kanjonille. Matkan taittaa myös Vegasista suhteellisen sutjakkaasti neljässä tunnissa. Me lähdimme kuitenkin matkaan Los Angelesista, josta mielestäni kannattaa lähteä jo ennen auringonnousua, mikäli mielii välttää ruuhkat. Ajoa kertyy pysähdyksineen Tusayanin kylälle noin 8 tuntia. Kevät tai alkusyksy ovat varmaan parhaita aikoja vierailulle, kun suuret turistimassat loistavat poissaolollaan ja hinnat ovat kohtuullisia.

Many have asked me how and when to travel to Grand Canyon. There are several routes, depending on where you’re starting off from. Route 66, Sedona, Flagstaff and Phoenix are perhaps the closest attractions from where it’s easy to just stop by the canyon. You can also make the journey from Vegas in about 4 hours. We however set off from Los Angeles, from where it’s probablyt easiest to depart before sunrise, to be able to avoid the worst traffic. The trip to Tusayan will approximately take you 8 hours with a few stops. Spring or early fall are probably the best times to visit, when the large tourist masses are gone and the prices are more reasonable.

Mielestäni kanjonilla kannattaa ehdottomasti viettää ainakin noin vuorokausi, jotta pääsee näkemään kuinka vuorokaudenajat vaikuttavat kanjonin valoon. Tusayanissa asuimme Best Western Premier Grand Canyon Squire Inn:issä, jota voin lämpimästi suositella kaikille. Hotelliyö oli elokuun lopulla noin 150€ ja siihen kuului jenkkistandardilla erinomainen aamiainen. Grand Canyonin pääsylipun voi ostaa suoraan hotellin respasta. Se maksaa $25 ja on voimassa 7 vuorokautta yhdelle autolliselle vierailijoita.

I think the canyon is definitely worth visiting for apprximately 24 hours to see how the different times of day affect the light on the canyon. In Tusayan we stayed at the Best Western Premier Grand Canyon Squire Inn, which I can warmly recommend to everyone. The night at the end of August cost us about $200 and included on US standards an excellent breakfast. The entrance fee to the Grand Canyon National Park can be paid for directly at the hotel reception for $25. It’s valid 7 days for one car load of passengers.

Kiireisimpinä aikoina puistoon on ehdottomasti helpoin matkustaa bussilla, joka kulkee suoraan hotellin edestä kanjonin Visitor Centerille noin 20 minuutissa. Bussiyhteydet ovat muutenkin laajat ja kattavat. Lisätietoa busseista löytyy täältä. Kanjonin reunaa kannattaa myös suhautella edestakaisin bussilla, sillä etäisyydet ovat pidempiä kuin voisi uskoakaan ja eri kulmista kanjoni näyttää hyvinkin erilaiselta.

During the busiest peak hours it’s definitely easiest to travel to the canyon by bus. It stops right in front of the hotel and takes you straight to the Visitor Center in 20 minutes. The bus lines are vast and comprehensive. More information about them here. It’s a smart bet to travel along the rim by bus, because the distances are much longer than you might imagine and the canyon looks different at every angle.

Me vierailimme siis South Rimillä, joka on varmasti suosituin kohde luonnonpuistossa. North Rim ei maantieteellisesti ole kaukana, mutta ajomatkaa kertyy eri puolien välillä noin nelisen tuntia. North Rim on kuitenkin lähellä Pagea, mikäli mielii vaikka samalla reissulla katsastaa sikäläisen Antelope Canyonin.

We visited the South Rim, which is probably the most popular destination at the National Park. The North Rim isn’t geographically far away, but it’s about 4 hours from the South Rim by car. The North Rim is however closer to Page, if you are perhaps interested in visiting the nearby Antelope Canyon at the same time.
