Viime kesän metsäpalot vaikuttivat Yosemiten-matkaamme merkittävästi valitsemamme reitin kannalta. Olisimme halunneet ajaa perille Bishopin ja Mono Laken kautta vuoristotietä pitkin, mutta palon suljettua juuri kyseisen tien, päädyimmekin ajamaan Bakersfieldiin edeltäväksi yöksi. Ja hyvä näin, sillä toista reittiä ajaessa emme luultavasti olisi päätyneet lainkaan Yosemiten eteläportin läheisyydessä olevaan Mariposa Groveen.
Last summer’s forest fires impacted our trip to Yosemite significantly. We would have liked to drive through Bishop and Mono Lake and cross over the mountains to get there, but since the fire had blocked that specific route, we decided to instead drive to Bakersfield the previous night. Good thing we did, since if we’d taken the other route, we probably never would have made it to Mariposa Grove close to the South Entrance.
Liisan toimiessa kuskina pääsin räpsimään kuvia matkan varrelta. Hämmästyttävintä oli kuinka nopeasti maisema muuttui. Tuntui ettei matkaa ollut tuntiakaan näiden laakeiden maisemien, vuoriston ja mammuttipetäjien välillä.
As Liisa was driving, I got to snap some pictures along the way. It was surprising to see how quickly the scenery changed during our drive. It felt like these fields were less than an hour away from the mountains and the Giant Sequoias.
Puiston portilla maksoimme mukisematta pääsymaksun ja ajoimme auton kauemmaksi parkkiin, josta bussi kuljetti meidät sopivasti Mariposa Groven suulle. Näitä uskomattomia jättiläispuita pääsi bongaamaan jo lähiparkkipaikalta ja ylämäkeen vievän polun varrelta, mutta suurin osa matkailijoista haluaa kuitenkin kiivetä Grizzly Giantille asti.
We willingly paid the entrance fee at the gate and drove our car to the parking lot further away, where a bus picked us up and took us to the Grove. You could already spot some of these incredible giant trees at the grove’s parking lot and along the path leading uphill. However most travelers want to head up all the way to the Grizzly Giant.
Reitin varrella pääsee näkemään metsää luonnollisessa tilassaan. Palaneita vanhoja runkoja näkyy paljon, ja vaikka onkin surullista että niin hienot vanhat puut palavat poroksi, on se kuitenkin välttämätöntä puiden lisääntymisen kannalta. Jättiläismäisen mammuttipetäjän kävyt on suhteessa aika pieniä, ja siemenkodat eivät pääse kunnolla aukeamaan ilman metsäpalojen lämmön aikaansaamaa kuumuutta. Ne isot kävyt, joita ihmiset tuovat mukanaan Kalifornian matkoilta, ei siis suinkaan ole peräisin näistä puista, vaan Thomas Coulterin mukaan nimetyistä Jättikäpymännyistä.
Along the trail you get to see the grove in it’s natural state. There are lots of burned tree trunks and even if it’s sad to see so many fine trees burned down, it’s unfortunately necessary for the trees’ continued procreation. The cones of the Giant Sequoias are relatively small and they cannot properly crack open without the heat emanated from forest fires. The big cones that people bring with them from their trips to California aren’t actually from these trees at all, but from Coulter Pines, named after Thomas Coulter.
Grizzly Giant ei ole suurin, eikä myöskään korkein puu maailmassa, mutta se on varmasti yksi suosituimmista. Sen koko on niin valtava, ettei sitä mitenkään voi ilmaista kuvin. Se, kuten suunnaton Grand Canyonkin ovat nähtävyyksiä, jotka on yksinkertaisesti pakko kokea itse. Lyhyesti faktaa Grizzly Giantista: se on liki 64 metriä korkea, sen ympärysmitta maan tasalla on 29.5 metriä ja sen tilavuus on 963 kuutiometriä. Arvioidaan, että puu on 1900–2400 vuotta vanha. Sen suurin oksa, joka sojottaa kohti korkeuksia puun oikealla puolella, on 7 metrin ympärysmitallaan suurempi kuin mikään Suomessa kasvava puu. Ja jossette muuten usko, niin verratkaa vain noihin ympärillä kasvaviin puihin.
The Grizzly Giant isn’t the biggest, nor the tallest tree in the world, but it is for sure one of the most popular ones. It is so massive, that you simply can’t capture it’s size in a photo. Like the enormous Grand Canyon, it’s just one of those sights you have to see for yourself. Some facts about the Grizzly Giant: it is 210 ft tall, its circumference at ground is 96.5 feet and its estimated volume is some 34,000 cubic feet. They estimate the tree to be around 1900–2400 years old. Its largest branch, sticking out towards the sky on the right, is nearly 23 feet in circumference, which makes it larger than any tree in Finland. And if you don’t believe me otherwise, just compare it to the other trees growing nearby.
Tästäkään kuvasta ei kunnolla käy ilmi kuinka pieniä me oikeasti olimme tuon puun rinnalla.

Läheinen California Tunnel Tree on siitä erikoinen Mariposa Grovessa, että sitä pääsee koskettamaan ja jopa halaamaan. Tunneli on koverrettu puuhun vuonna 1895 ja se on ainoa elossa oleva tunnelipuu.
The nearby California Tunnel Tree is special at the Mariposa Grove, since you can actually touch it and even hug it. The tunnel was cut into the tree in 1895 and it is the only living tree with a tunnel in it.

Kateltiin sillon kuvia näistä pikasesti sun puhelimella, mutta kiva oli lukia tämäkin. Ei voi oikein käsittää tuota kokoa täältä ruudun takaa, mutta tuo vertaus suurimman oksan ja Suomen puiden välillä did the trick aika hyvin! 🙂
