Palataan vielä hetkeksi takaisin Oregoniin, kesään 2008. Seaside on pieni kyläpahanen lähellä Cannon Beachin jylhiä rantamaisemia, ja sillä on paljon mielenkiintoista tarjottavaa pienestä koostaan huolimatta. Ensisijaisesti Seaside on rantakohde, mutta sieltä löytää helposti muutakin tekemistä. Itse olisin helposti voinut rentoutua täällä pidempäänkin.
Let’s go back to Oregon for a bit and the summer of 2008. Seaside is a small town close to the rugged views of Cannon Beach and has lots of interesting things to offer despite its small size. First and foremost Seaside is a beach destination, but you’ll easily find other things to do as well. I could have easily relaxed here for a bit longer than just a few days.
Lähinnä Seaside muistuttaa minua erään lempileffani Pleasantvillen 50-luvun maisemista ja elokuvissa nähdyistä karnevaalikylistä. Täältä löytyy kauniita seinämaalauksia, pastellinvärisiä rakennuksia, kahviloita, pikkukauppoja ja pelihalli.
Mostly Seaside reminds me of the 50’s setting in one of my favorite movies, Pleasantville, but also those carnie towns you see in the movies. Here you will find beautiful murals, pastel colored lowrise buildings, cafes, little stores and an arcade.
Vietimme pelihallissa luvattoman monta tuntia ajaen törmäilyautoilla ja pelaten skeeballia ja ilmakiekkoa. Peliautomaateista ei varsinaisesti saa rahaa palkinnoksi, vaan koneet suoltavat janassa lippulappusia, jotka sitten tiskillä vaihdetaan itseä miellyttävään palkintoon.
We got stuck at the arcade for hours, driving bumper cars and playing skee ball and air hockey. The arcade games don’t actually reward your results with coins, but are instead redemption games, where the machines feed out tickets for you to exchange for a prize at the counter.
Seasiden maamerkki on Lewis & Clarkin tutkimusretken kunniaksi pykätty patsas, joka löytyy aivan rannan kupeesta. Rannalla oli mukava kävellä avojaloin ja nauttia lämpimästä hiekasta, vaikka vesi olikin vielä kesäkuussa aivan jääkylmää.
The Seaside landmark is a statue built in honor of the Lewis & Clark expedition and can be found right by the beach. It was nice to walk barefoot on the beach and enjoy the warm sand, even if the water was still unbearably cold in late June.
Rantabulevardin varrelta löytyy myös mielenkiintoinen pieni akvaario, jossa näytillä on muun muassa Victor-hummeri, joka eli liki 13 kiloisena hummerina huomattavan hienon elämän kunnes joutui vierailijan kidnappaamaksi, putosi vahingossa maahan ja kuoli.
You’ll also find an interesting little aquarium along the boardwalk, where you can among others see Victor the lobster, who lived a substantially fine life at 28 lbs. until he was kidnapped by a visitor and accidentally dropped to his cracking demise.
Oregonin erikoisuus on ehdottomasti se, että siellä ei saa itse tankata autoaan. Autossa pitää istua kiltisti sisällä kun työntekijä tekee sen puolestasi. Moni käykin Washingtonin puolella tankkaamassa autonsa saadakseen hieman jännitystä elämään.
The special thing about Oregon is for sure that you can’t pump your own gas. You have to kindly remain in your car as the employee does it for you. Many actually drive over to Washington to get gas and a little excitement in their lives.
Seasidesta hieman pohjoiseen löytyy Astorian kaupunki, joka on tunnettu lukuisista elokuvista. Muun muassa Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, The Ring, Into the Wild ja lapsuuteni pelottava suosikki The Goonies. “Goonies never say die!”
North of Seaside lies the city of Astoria, which is famous from many movies. Here they filmed The Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, The Ring, Into the Wild and my childhood’s favorite scary movie The Goonies. “Goonies never say die!”
Astoriassa ehdottomasti hienoin juttu on silti sen silta! Väri, rakenne, maisema, kaikki. Kyllä ne sillatkin iskee tähän tyttöön aika kovaa majakoiden lisäksi. Astoriasta pääsee siis vain sillan ylittämällä Washingtonin puolelle, ja samalla tietenkin ihailemaan Columbia-joen mahtavuutta.
The greatest thing about Astoria is however its bridge! The color, the build, the scenery, everything. I must admit I’m not just a fan of lighthouses, but bridges as well. From Astoria you can just cross over the bridge to Washington and at the same time marvel at the greatness of the Columbia River.

Hah, aika hauska juttu tuo että autoja ei saa tankata itse, tiiätkö mikä siihen on syynä? Mua vähän jopa harmittaa ku en oo vielä kertaakaan ajanu jenkeissä semmoselle service stationille, missä joku olis tankannu mun puolesta. Ehkä vielä joskus! Ja nää oot kyllä kaupannu mulle Oregonin aika hyvin! 😀
