Tapasimme ensi kertaa jo monta vuotta sitten. Olin tuolloin nuorempi, naivimpi ja vasta oppimassa elämästä. Teit minuun suuren vaikutuksen, ja vannoin että jonakin päivänä palaan tapaamaan sinua. Vaikka matka takaisin luoksesi oli pitkä ja mutkainen, oli se kuitenkin jokaisen vaikeankin hetken arvoinen. Moni asia on muuttunut elämässäni, olen uinut virran mukana, nähnyt ja kokenut, itkenyt ja nauranut, mutta olen kuitenkin pysynyt itselleni rehellisenä ja rakkailleni uskollisena.

Our first encounter happened years ago. Back then I was younger, more naive and just beginning to learn about the lessons of life. You made a great impression on me and I swore, that one day I would come to see you again. And even if the road back has been quite long and winding, it has still been worth every trial and every error. Many things in my life have changed, I’ve swam with the current, I’ve seen and experienced, I’ve cried and I’ve laughed, but I’ve always been true to myself and my loved ones.

Vierailin Mount Rushmorella ensimmäistä kertaa jo kohta kymmenen vuotta sitten. Monumentti oli minulle tuttu lapsuudesta, jolloin selasin ahkerasti tätini vanhaa kirjaa America’s Wonderlands The National Parks. Toki tämä Etelä-Dakotan suuri ihme on hieno, ehkä eniten sen vuoksi, että sen räjäyttäminen dynamiitilla kallioon aloitettiin tanskalaissyntyisen Gutzon Borglumin johdolla jo 1920-luvulla, jotta tähän suhteellisen vähän tunnettuun osavaltioon saataisiin houkuteltua lisää turisteja. Kääntöpuolena nämä kalliot ja nämä maisemat, jotka tunnetaan myös nimellä “Six Grandfathers”, ovat olleet perinteisesti Lakota-intiaanien maita ja sielunmaisemia,  ja presidenttien kovertaminen kallioon on tuonut mukanaan paljon polemiikkia. Lähialueelle onkin edelleen rakenteilla Lakota-intiaanen perinteitä kunnioittava Crazy Horse Memorial, joka ei sekään ole välttynyt kritiikiltä. Ristiriidoista huolimatta Mount Rushmore on osa USA:n historiaa ja suhteellisen nuorta kansanperinnettä ja toki se sijaitsee erittäin mielenkiintoisella alueella, jonne suositan jokaisen jenkkiroadtrippaajan edes kerran elämässä matkaavan.

I first visited Mount Rushmore nearly ten years ago. The monument was familiar from my childhood, when I actively browsed in my aunt’s old book America’s Wonderlands The National Parks. Of course this South Dakotan wonder is a great sight, mostly because headed by the Danish-American Gutzon Borglum, they started blasting it into the rock with dynamite already in the 1920’s, mostly to bring more tourism to this lesser known state. The flip side is, that these rocks and this scenery, known as the “Six Grandfathers”, has traditionally and spiritually been in the lands of the native Lakota, and carving the presidents into these Black Hills has brought on a great amount of controversy. To honor the traditions and legacy of the Lakota, there is also another rock sculpture, still being built in the same area, called Crazy Horse Memorial, which hasn’t been devoid of its own problems. Despite the controversy that Mount Rushmore has endured, it is an essential part of US history and its short lived folklore, and is located in an interesting part of the country, which is worth a visit, at least once in a lifetime.
