Montanassa ajellessa maisemia ja tunnelmaa varjosti jatkuvasti ilmassa leijuva sankka savu. Viime kesänä oli Luoteis-USA:ssa ennätysmäärä metsäpaloja ja ne tekivät tuhoa laajalti etenkin Montanassa. Elokuun lopulla alueella roihusi jopa 101 metsäpaloa ja savu levisi pitkälle lähiympäristöön. Erityisesti savu häiritsi vuorinäkymiä ja hengitystä.

As we drove through Montana the sights were constantly overshadowed by a thick cloud of smoke. Last summer, the Northwest was widely plagued by forest fires and burned down wide areas especially in Montana. At the end of August there were up to 101 forest fires in the area and smoke spread far and wide. It especially overshadowed the mountain views.

Odotimme innolla matkan seuraavaa etappia kun ylittäisimme rajan Kanadaan ja toivoimme, että savu tulisi hälvenemään Calgaryyn saavuttaessa.

We eagerly awaited the following leg of our trip when we would cross the border to Canada and hoped that the smoke would clear by the time we arrived in Calgary.
