Joskus on tullut matkustettua paikkoihin jotka jälkeenpäin tuntuvat liki unelta. Oliko se paikka oikeasti totta? Koinko oikeasti niin taianomaisia hetkiä? Jasperin kansallispuiston Maligne (ma-liin) Lake on yksi niistä. Tätä maagisempaa paikkaa jossa mennään täysin luonnon armoilla saa hakea. Tällä järvellä meloimme kajakilla yli 30 kilometriä, ystävystyin lintuun, uimme turkoosissa neliasteisessa vedessä ja telttailtiin alueella joka vilisi villipeuroja.

Sometimes I’ve traveled to places that afterwards have felt like something out of a dream. Was that place really real? Did I really experience something so magical? Maligne (mah-leen) Lake in Jasper National Park is one of them. This place is completely at nature’s mercy and that’s what’s so grand about it. Here we kayaked nearly 20 miles, I made friends with a bird, we swam in freezing cold turquoise water and camped in a spot full of wild deer.

Melontareissua Maligne Lakelle ryhdyttiin suunnittelemaan jo varhain viime keväänä. Järvi joka sijaitsee vajaan tunnin ajomatkan päässä Jasperin kylältä on tunnettu upeasta turkoosista vedestään, mutta myös legendaarisesta henkien saaresta Spirit Islandista. Järvellä järjestetään motorisoituja veneajeluita saarelle, mutta huomattavasti viihtyisämpi tapa tutustua luontoon ja näkymiin on meloa saarelle ihan omin avuin. Matkaa kertyy suuntaansa linnuntietä noin 15 kilometriä eli melontaa vasta aloittelevalle matka saattaa olla jokseenkin haastava. Järvellä on Jasperin kansallispuiston ylläpitämiä leirintäalueita kolme, mutta nämä ovat selvästi primitiivisempiä alueita kuin ne mihin yleensä kansallispuistoissa on totuttu. Polttopuut kannattaa tuoda itse mukanaan. Vessa oli riukua hieman hohdokkaampi viritys ilman seiniä ja ovea. Itse päädyimme varaamaan telttapaikan Fisherman’s Baysta, joka sijaitsi noin puolivälissä järveä. Suipon järven laidoista kannattaa menomatkalla meloessa valita se vasen, jotta säästää etäisyydessä hieman. Kauempaa olisi löytynyt vielä paljon kehuttu Coronet Creekin alue, mutta sinne matkaa olisi kertynyt melkein toiset mokomat ja päätimme jättää sen seuraavaan kertaan. Fisherman’s Bayn paikka varattiin tasan 3kk ennen, jolloin varaus piti hoitaa soittamalla Jasper National Parkin toimiston vastaajaan. Telttapaikka, backcountry camping permit ja tulentekolupa maksettiin ennakkoon luottokortilla ja oli yhteensä noin 50€. Kaksikkokajakit varasimme Curly Philips Boathouselta, jossa niille kertyi hintaa vuorokaudelle noin 75€/hlö.

We started planning our trip to Maligne Lake early on last spring. This lake which is located about an hour away from the town of Jasper is known for its splendid turquoise water, but also for the legendary Spirit Island heavily featured in social media. There are organized trips on motorized boats to the island, but it’s much more enjoyable to get in tune with the nature and the views by paddling to the island yourself. As the bird flies, it’s about 10 miles in each direction, so for someone only learning to paddle it might be a bit of a stretch. There are three campgrounds along the lake in total, all maintained by Jasper National Park, but they are much more primitive than the other campgrounds you usually stay at in the park system. You should bring your own firewood here too. The bathrooms are open-air, no walls, no doors. Just a bucket in a hut. We ended up booking our campsite in Fisherman’s Bay, which is located approximately halfway down the lake. It’s worth paddling along the left hand rim on the way out, since it saves a bit on the distance on this long and narrow lake. The much praised Coronet Creek Area is located even further away, but it would have been nearly double the distance so we decided to leave it for next time. We reserved our spot at Fisherman’s Bay exactly 3 months in advance, which had to be done by calling the Park Service by phone. The campsite, the backcountry camping permit and fire permit were paid in advance by credit card and came to a total of $50. The double kayaks were booked through Curly Philips Boathouse and were around $75 per person for 24 hours.

Suosittelen tätä paikkaa kaikille seikkailunhaluisille matkaajille. Kokemus oli unohtumaton, vaikka jälkikäteen tunsi kyllä meloneensa. Joskus kannattaa kuitenkin nähdä paljonkin vaivaa, jotta löytää omanlaisiaan paikkoja kaukana muista.

I recommend this place to everyone with a taste for adventure. The experience was unforgettable, even if we felt all the paddling in our bones afterwards. Sometimes it’s so worth going through the trouble to find special places away from everyone else.
