Tässä tulee blogin ensimmäinen vieraskynä. Viime elokuussa vietimme ihanan Liisan synttäreitä Yellowstonen kansallispuistossa Madisonin telttailualueella ja kuka paremmin kertomaan illasta kuin itse Liisa, drumroll please…

Here is this blog’s first ever guest post. Last August we celebrated the lovely Liisa’s birthday in Yellowstone National Park at the Madison Campground, and who better to tell about that night than Liisa herself, so drumroll please…

“Olen elokuun lapsi, ja täytin pyöreitä viime syksyn jenkkireissulla. Kea pyysi minua kirjoittamaan merkkipäivästäni, kiitos kunniasta!

Luvassa oli kiireetön matkapäivä: reilun kuuden tunnin ajo etelään kohti Yellowstonen kansallispuistoa. Matkalla poikkesimme Missoulan kaupungissa täyttämässä ruokavarastot ja hyödyntämässä Montanan osavaltion arvonlisäverottomuutta paikallisissa kaupoissa. Olimme suunnitelleet viettävämme rennon illan telttapaikalla kokkaillen, muutamia juomia nuotion äärellä nautiskellen ja Kalliovuorten hämärtyvää iltaa ihaillen. Aurinko laskisi kahdeksan maissa, minkä jälkeen taivaalle nousisi täysikuu.”

“I’m a child of August, and during our road trip I turned my 30th leaf. Kea asked me to write about it, thanks for the honor!

We were in for a leisurely day of traveling: roughly a six hour drive south towards Yellowstone National Park. On the way we stopped by the city of Missoula to fill up on groceries and to take advantage of the 0% sales tax in Montana at the local shops. We had planned on spending a laid back evening by our campsite, making dinner, enjoying a few drinks by the campfire and admiring the darkening night in the Rocky Mountains. The sun would set around eight o’clock and then the full moon would be coming up.”

“Saavuimme Yellowstoneen ja Madisonin leirintäalueelle, jonne pystytimme jo useamman reissupäivän rutiinilla leirin. Maaperä tosin oli niin kovaa, että kiilojen naputtelu onnistui vasta telttanaapurilta lainatulla vasaralla.”

“We arrived in Yellowstone and the Madison Campground where we set up camp with a set routine already under our belts. However the ground was so hard that we couldn’t get the tent pegs in, until we borrowed a hammer from our neighbor.”

“Joku taisi alkuillasta vilkaista sääennustetta: pisara tai pari, ei kummempaa. Syntymäpäiväsankarina sain toivoa illan ruokalajin, ja illallinen koostui nuotiolla loimutetusta lohesta ja kasviksista. Tytöt lauloivat onnittelulaulun ja antoivat lahjaksi Stanleyn särmän taskumatin. Täytteeksi Laura kaatoi vielä klassisia kotimaan makuja, eli salmiakkikossua. Istuimme siinä Yellowstonen pimenevässä illassa tyytyväisinä vatsat täynnä, koko ilta edessä.”

“I think someone might have had a look at the weather early in the evening – maybe a drop or two, nothing special. Since I was the birthday girl, I got to request a special dinner, which consisted of fire blazed salmon and veggies. The girls sang a birthday song and gifted me a rugged Stanley flask. Laura filled it up with classic Finnish flavors, aka. Salmiakki. There we sat, in the darkening night of Yellowstone, content, bellies full, the whole evening ahead of us.”

“Sitten alkoi sataa. Aluksi rauhallisesti ripotellen, pian lähes kaataen. Teimme varmasti koko reissun leirin purun nopeusennätyksen kun otsalamppujen ja myrskylyhdyn valossa siivosimme illallisen jäljet, kokosimme trangiat ja muut tykötarpeet ja pakkasimme tavarat autoon sateelta suojaan. Itse vetäydyimme telttoihin. Pian taivas aukesi kunnolla ja tuuli yltyi. Se elokuun lopun yö taisi olla reissumme myrskyisin. Onneksi kiilat oli nakutettu syvälle keltaiseen maahan ja telttakankaat kestivät vettä. Ilta jäi siis lyhyeksi: ei tarinoitu tulen äärellä, ei ihasteltu täysikuuta.”

“Then it started raining. Slowly at first, but soon it was pouring. We packed up the fastest ever, using our headlamps and the barn lantern to clean up after dinner, put our camp stove and other things away and stored it all in the car, away from the rain. Then we got in the tents. Soon the sky really opened up and the wind turned. That night at the end of August was probably the stormiest night of our trip. Fortunately the tent pegs were hammered down deep into the ground and our rainflys kept the water out. The night was cut short: there were no stories by the fire, no full moon to admire.”

“Synttäripäivästä jäi kuitenkin mukavat muistot, vaikka se kesken loppuikin. Makuupussin suojissa, sateen ja tuulen raivotessa telttakankaan toisella puolella, oli hyvä miettiä alkureissun aikana nähtyä ja koettua, kuten myös sitä, mitä tulevat päivät toisivat tullessaan. Taisinpa siinä pohtia muutakin elettyä ja tulevaa elämää, kunnes nukahdin sadeenropinaan.”

“I still have nice memories from my birthday, even if it ended abruptly. While nestled in my sleeping bag, as the rain and wind were furious on the outside, it was a good time to think about everything we had seen and experienced during the first half of our trip and what was yet to come. I think I also thought of the life I’ve lived and what would lie ahead, until I fell asleep to the rain.”
