“Round the bend” on mielenkiintoinen idiomi. Se tarkoittaa hullua, järjetöntä. Ja siltä tämä maailma on minusta vaikuttanut viime aikoina. Tuntuu siltä, että vihan, ennakkoluulojen ja itsekkyyden virta on loputon. Se mitä muut saa, ei ole itseltä pois; se että joku on erilainen kuin sinä, ei tule vaikuttamaan sinuun mitenkään ja muiden vihaaminen ei VARMASTI tule muuttamaan yhtään mitään. Ainoa asia joka voi muuttaa tätä uppoavaa laivaa on ymmärrys. Ymmärrys, että  ihmiset ovat vain ihmisiä, ja että olemme biologisesti 99,5% samanlaisia riippumatta siitä miltä näytämme tai miltä kuulostamme.

“Round the bend” is an interesting phrase. It basically means crazy, insane. And that’s how this world has seemed to me lately. Seems like the flow of hate, prejudice and selfishness in a never-ending abyss. What others get, isn’t less for you; the fact that someone is different from you, does not affect who you are and hating on others will REALLY not change a single thing. The only thing that can change this sinking ship we call our world, is understanding. Understanding that people are just people and that we are all biologically 99.5% equal, indifferent of what we look or sound like.

Jos voisin lähettää universumille viestin, olisi se: rakasta enemmän, vihaa vähemmän. Vaikuttaa siltä, että minulla sekä usealla ystävälläni on viime aikoina ollut vaikeaa. On ollut sairautta, läheisten sairauksia, lemmikkien sairauksia, ja samalla maailmalla kuohuu. On sotaa, on vihaa, on ikäviä sanoja ja vielä ikävämpiä tekoja. Tuntuu triviaalilta lukea ja kirjoittaa matkoista, haaveista ja itsestä kun asiat ovat maailmalla niin heikosti. Kultareunus tähän päivään tuli ystävältäni, joka vihdoin sai lääkäriltä terveen paperit, ja joka kommentoi että joskus olisi kiva olla sellainen ihminen jolla ei olisi tunteita eikä empatiaa muita kohtaan. Näin säästyisi paljolta. Ja samaa mieltä olen minäkin. Mutta jos maailmassa ei olisi meidänkaltaisia tuntevia empaatteja, mitä tapahtuisikaan yhteiskunnassa? Kaikki me olemme tärkeitä, omalla tavallamme. Pitäisi vain pystyä puhaltamaan yhteen hiileen, riippumatta taustasta, uskomuksista ja perimästä.

If I could send out one message into the universe, it would be: love more, hate less. Lately it seems like both my friends and I have been having an exceptionally hard time. There has been sickness, sickness of loved ones, sickness of pets and at the same time the world is reeling. There are wars, hate, evil words and even more evil actions. It feels so trivial to read and to write about travels, dreams and oneself when the world seems so bleak. Today’s silver lining was delivered by my friend who finally got a clean bill of health from their doctor and who commented, that sometimes it would be nice to be that kind of person who doesn’t have feelings or empathy towards others. And I feel the same way. But if the world wouldn’t have empaths like us, what would happen in society? We are all important in our own way. We should just be able to pull together, indifferent of background, beliefs and genetics.

Vierailimme Arizonan Pagessa Horseshoe Bendillä eräänä syyskuisena iltana. Ilma oli lämmin mutta jokseenkin tuulinen. Joenmutkaa katsellessa ei voinut kuin ihmetellä kuinka veden voima voi olla niin ääretön. Vähän vettä ja paljon aikaa, ja tulos on näin merkittävä.

We visited Arizona’s Horseshoe Bend in Page on one evening in September. The weather was warm, but somewhat windy. As we were looking at this bend in the river, we could but wonder how almighty the force of water is. A little bit of water and a lot of time and the result can be so significant.
