Coloradon Mesa Verde on jokseenkin erilainen kansallispuisto. Siinä missä monet puistot esittelevät luonnon luomuksia erilaisin piirtein, on tässä puistossa erikoisuutena se, miten ihmiset ovat entisaikoina muokanneet luontoa omiin tarpeisiin sopivaksi. Mesojen, eli näiden lättätoppaisten kalliomuodostelmien lipan alle rakennetut asutukset häviävät helposti maisemaan. Ja se oli aikanaan tarkoituskin. Ihmiset asuivat turvassa kallionkielekkeen alla useamman sata vuotta, kunnes he joskus 1300-luvun tienoilla hävisivät. Heidän jälkensä ovat kuitenkin säilyneet tähän päivään asti.

Colorado’s Mesa Verde is a somewhat different kind of National Park from all the others. Whereas many parks display nature’s creations in different ways, the specialty of this park is how people have shaped nature to fit their own needs back in the days. These dwellings were built under the cliffs of these colorful mesas and seem to easily disappear into the surrounding scenery. Which was actually the point of it all. The people lived safe under these cliffs for several hundreds of years, until they suddenly disappered around the 1300’s. Their legacy has however lasted until this day.

Puistossa pääsee tutustumaan asutuksiin sekä opastetuilla kierroksilla, että omin päin. Kaikkiin asutuksiin ei ole pääsyä, ja joihinkin pääsee pelkästään oppaan kanssa varaamalla ja maksamalla kierros ennakkoon. Me kävimme omin päin tutustumassa parhaiten säilyneeseen Spruce Tree Houseen, jonka jälkeen ajelimme ympäri puistoa zoomailemassa kallioita zoomilinssien ja kiikareiden kanssa.

You can see the dwellings both on guided and self-guided tours. All dwellings are not open for viewing and some are only open for guided tours by reserving and paying in advance. We did a self-guided tour to Spruce Tree House, which is one of the best preserved dwellings in the park. Afterwards we drove around the park viewing the cliffs with our zoom lenses and binoculars.
