Alaskan isäni tapasi kertoa minulle teininä, että tiesinkö, että Jenkeissä on paikka nimeltä Four Corners, jossa pääsee käymään neljässä osavaltiossa samaan aikaan. Pitkään paikka säilyi mielessäni muistona tämän vaihtari-isäni ja minun yhteisistä isä-tytär hetkistä. Hän on ollut minulle elämäni aikana tärkeä. Sellainen minkälainen oma biologinen isän ei välttämättä ole ollut. Molemmat ovat minulle rakkaita, eri tavoin. Yksi isä molemmin puolin Atlanttia tai Tyyntä valtamerta. Viime kesänä pääsin vihdoin käymään Four Cornersissa.

My Alaskan dad used to ask me as a teenager, if I knew that there was a place in the US called Four Corners, where you can visit four states at the same time. For a long while the place was in my mind as a memory from my father-daughter moments together with my host-dad. He has been very important to me during my life. The kind of dad my biological dad never was. Both are very dear to me, in very different ways. One dad on each side of the Atlantic or even Pacific. Last summer I finally got to visit Four Corners for real.

Mielikuva paikasta oli ehkä hieman erilainen kuin todellisuus. Sisäänpääsy oli 5 dollaria henkilöltä. Ihmiset jonottivat pääsystä maahan upotetulle pienelle laatalle. Harvoin sanon että “no, tulipahan käytyä”. Nyt voin sen sanoa, tulipahan käytyä. Jos ei muuten, niin siksi että seisoessani tuolla laatalla ajattelin Alaskan isääni ja sitä kuinka hyvä hän on minulle vuosien mittaan ollut.

I had thought of the place as somewhat different than it was. Entrance was 5 dollars per person. People were standing in line to see the plaque on the ground. I rarely say that “oh, it was just some place I saw”. But now I probably could. At least while standing on that plate I thought of my Alaskan dad and how good he has been to me throughout the years.
