Kenain niemimaalla oli paljon puhetta kalasta. Ja kaikella oikeutuksella. Ihmiset joka puolelta osavaltiota ja jopa muualta USA:sta tulevat tänne nappaamaan parhaat lohet, kirjolohet, härkänieriät ja ruijanpallakset runsaista vesistä. Monen unelma Alaskaan liittyen onkin lähteä sinne juurikin kalaan. Täällä päin asuessa on tärkeää tietää kalastuksen perusasiat.

There was a lot of talk about fish on the Kenai. And rightly so. People from all over the state and even the lower 48 flock here to catch their salmon, halibut, Dolly Varden or steelhead in the abundant rivers, lakes and the ocean. Many dream of traveling to Alaska for the sole purpose of fishing. While living here, it is important to know the basics.

Öljyn lisäksi osavaltion tärkein vientivaltti on juurikin kala. Ja sitähän täällä riittää. Lähinnä lohta ja ruijanpallasta, mutta myös muita kalalajeja ja rapuja. Oleellista on tietää miten paikalliset suhtautuvat kalaan ja miten tyynen Valtameren lohet eroavat Atlantin lohesta.

Aside from oil, the most important source of income in this state is fish. And there’s lots of it. Mostly salmon and halibut, but also other types of fish and crab. It’s essential to know how locals feel about fish and how the Pacific salmon is different from the Atlantic kind.

Alaskalaiset tietävät hyvin miten viljelty ja villi lohi eroavat toisistaan. Viljellyn lohen erottaa heti väristä ja koostumuksesta. Villi lohi on aina punaisempaa ja maukkaampaa. Tyynellä valtamerellä uiskentelee lisäksi myös useaa eri lohityyppiä, tällä alueella tarkemmin viisi erilaista lohta. King, eli Chinook, Silver eli Coho, Red eli Sockeye, Chum eli Dog ja Pink eli Humpback.

Alaskans are well aware of how farmed salmon differs from the wild. You can always tell farmed fish apart by color and consistency. Wild salmon is more red and much tastier. There are several types of salmon swimming around in the Pacific, and five of them in this region. King, or Chinook, Silver or Coho, Red or Sockeye, Chum or Dog and Pink or Humpback.

Matkasimme Sewardin satamakaupungista läpi Kenain niemimaan kohti Soldotnan lakeuksia ja alas kohti Homeria, jonne olin halunnut palata jo pitkään. Nuoruuteni Homer oli hippikeidas, jossa vietetyt ajat muistan edelleen lämmöllä. Homerista on myös kotoisin muuan folk-laulaja nimeltä Jewel, jonka melankolisia balladeja fanitimme nuoruusvuosina.

We traveled across the Kenai Peninsula from Seward towards the flatlands of Soldotna and then down to Homer, where I had long dreamed of returning. The Homer of my youth was a liberal hippie town, which I still remember fondly. The folk singer Jewel, whose melancholy ballads we listened to in my teenage years, also hails from Homer.

Matkalla alas pitkin rannikkoa voi nähdä Lake Clarkin kansallispuiston tulivuoret pilkottavan kaukaisuudessa. Näistä tunnetuin on varmasti Mount Redoubt, joka purkautui viimeksi vuonna 2009, kun asuin vielä itsekin Alaskassa.

On the way down along the coast you can see the volcanoes in the distance over in Lake Clark National Park. The most famous is probably Mount Redoubt, which last erupted in 2009, when I was still living in Alaska myself.

Pysähdyimme kuvailemaan maisemia ja sattumalta osuimme kohtaan, joka parveili kalastajia ja vastakkaisella kalliolla pönötti kaunis valkoinen majakka.

We stopped to take pictures and happened to stumble upon a spot that was swarming with fishermen and saw a beautiful white lighthouse on the cliff.

Nämä kalamiehet olivat saapuneet pyytämään ruijanpallasta eri paikoista, jotkut heistä jopa Washingtonin osavaltiosta asti. Juttutuokio heidän kanssaan on vain yksi matkan ikimuistoisimmista kokemuksista. Nykypäivän ruijanpallakset ovat enää muisto vain entisaikoina pyydystetyistä jäteistä. Muistan niiden olleen parhaimmillaan aikuisen miehen mittaisia. Onkohan vain aika kullannut muistot?

These fishermen had come up to fish for halibut from many different places, some even all the way from down in Washington state. The conversation we had with them is just one of the unforgettable experiences of our trip. Today’s halibut are just a memory of what they used to be. I remember them being nearly giants beasts next to adult men. I wonder if my memories only have become sweeter with time?
