Karu voi olla kaunista. John Day Fossil Bedsin Clarno Unitin parkkipaikalla poimin pensaasta oksan. Voimakastuoksuinen sagebrush, eli suomeksi salviamaruna lähti mukaamme tien päälle. Marraskuussa palasin Oregoniin tapaamaan ystävääni ja oksa oli edelleen hänen pickupinsa kojelaudalla. Yhä se tuoksui huumaavalle, kuin tämä kesäpäivä keskellä Oregonin erämaan äärettömyyttä.

Barren can be beautiful. In the parking lot at the Clarno Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds, I picked up a branch of sagebrush. It had a strong, distinct smell, which followed us on the road. In November I returned to Oregon to visit my friend and the branch was still on the dashboard of his pickup truck. And the scent still lingered, heady as this summer’s day in the infinity of Oregon’s desert.

Clarno Unitin kivimuodostelmat ovat täynnä entisaikojen fossiloituneita kasveja ja eliöitä. Joskus tämä nykyään karu maisema oli sademetsän kaltainen keidas. Eipä Oregonin Portlandissa vieraillessa uskoisi, että vain kolmen tunnin ajomatkan päästä löytää kaikkea tätä. John Dayn jokaisen eri osion välille kertyy ajomatkaa parin tunnin verran teiden ollessa pieniä ja mutkaisia. Alueissa on kuitenkin jokaisessa oma viehätyksensä. The rock formations at Clarno Unit are full of fossilized plants and beings from times long lost. Once upon a time this landscape was a rainforest-like oasis. You wouldn’t believe in the heart of Portland, Oregon, that you can find all this only a mere three hour drive away. The different units of John Day are about two hours away from one another as the roads are narrow and windy.  Each unit has its own personal charm.
