Jos voisin kiteyttää menneen vuoden yhteen kuvaan, olisi se varmaan tämä. Tässä kuvassa yhdistyy kaikki mikä minulle on tärkeää. Vesi, vuoret, ystävä, koiraystävä ja USA. Jotta saisin kuitenkin menneen vuoden mielessäni nätisti rusetilla pakettiin ennen tulevaa postaustulvaa, on tässä vielä kooste kaikista niistä matkoista jotka rikastuttivat elämää viimeisen kahdentoista kuukauden aikana. Matkapäiviä kertyi yhteensä huimat 82!

If I could encapsulate the past year into one picture, it would probably be this one. It has all the elements that are important to me. Water, mountains, a friend, a canine friend and the US. To wrap my mind around everything that has happened this year and before I finally get to posting about it all, here is a recap of all the trips that made my life complete in the past twelve months. In total a staggering amount of 82 travel days!

NBE Finland

Reissuvuosi alkoi tammikuussa, kun sain kunnian osallistua NBE Finland proggikseen Matkamessujen yhteydessä. Matkasin ulkomaalaisten matkabloggaajien kanssa pitkin lumista ja hyytävän kylmää Päijännettä ja Tahkovuoren rinteitä.

Traveling began in January, when I got the honor to participate in NBE Finland, in connection with the Helsinki Travel Fair. I journeyed through the ice cold Päijänne region and the slopes of Tahko with a group of international travel bloggers.

Sweden

Huhtikuussa matkustin Ruotsiin kaksi kertaa viikon sisällä. Ensin ajoimme Inkan ja Even kanssa Volvon upean lainamaasturin Viking Linen hellään huomaan ja Tukholmasta ylös Hemavanin upeille lumille. Palattuani ehdin viettää päivän kotimaassa, ennen kuin jatkoin lentäen Tukholmaan lyhyelle kaupunkilomalle äitini kanssa. Viikkoon mahtui lunta ja kirsikankukkia.

In April I traveled to Sweden twice within a week. First off Inka, Eve ad I drove a fabulous Volvo SUV onto Viking Line and from Stockholm up to Hemavan for some much needed snow time. After I got back, I spent a day at home, before returning by plane to Stockholm for a short city vacation with my mother. In a week I got to see plenty of snow and cherry blossoms.

Alaska, part 1

Juuri ennen toukokuun puoliväliä lennähdimme parin ystäväni kanssa Alaskaan ystäväni häihin. Tuntui että kaikki kevään vaikeudet olivat tämän matkan aikana kuin pois pyyhittyjä. Näimme parin viikon ajan ihania ystäviäni parinkymmenen vuoden ajalta, nukuimme teltassa luonnossa, näimme villieläimiä ja nautimme suunnattomasti elosta ja olosta.

Just before mid-May we flew over to Alaska for a friend’s wedding with a couple of my friends from Finland. It felt like all my troubles were pretty much swept away during this trip. During a couple of weeks we saw some of my dear friends from as long as twenty years back, slept outdoors in a tent, saw wild animals and utterly enjoyed just being and breathing fresh air.

• one flight
• two rental cars
• about 1500 driven miles
• one set of hot springs
• one conquered mountain
• three grizzlies spotted
• a herd of caribous
• at least 10 humpback whales, 1 whale tour

• a lot of fish!

West Coast Road Trip

Alaskasta lensimme Seattleen, josta nappasimme auton alle. Ajelimme sisämaan kautta San Franciscoon ja sieltä rannikkoa pitkin takaisin Seattleen. Matka oli aivan henkeäsalpaavan upea.

• 7 kansallispuistoa (Mt Rainier, Crater Lake, Lassen Volcanic, Yosemite, Redwoods, Olympic ja North Cascades) + John Day Fossil Bedsin kansallismonumentti
• 10 yötä teltassa, 4 yötä motellissa, 3 yötä ystävillä
• yksi vuokra-auto
• noin 3000 ajettua mailia
• yhdet kuumat lähteet
• lukuisia vuoria ja vesiputouksia
• lukemattomia patikoituja polkuja
• uinti turkoosissa Tahoe-järvessä
• paljon peuroja, vielä enemmän korppeja
• upeita tähtitaivaita
• parhaimmillaan 4 metriä lunta (Crater Lake)
• koko matkan kylmin (melkein pakkasta) ja kuumin yö (lähes 40’C) molemmat Oregonissa
• 4 suurkaupunkia (Seattle, Reno, San Francisco, Portland)

From Alaska we flew to Seattle, where we got a car. We drove through the inland down to San Francisco and from there up along the coast back to Seattle. The trip was absolutely breathtaking.

• 12 feet of snow at most (Crater Lake)
• the coldest (nearly freezing) and hottest night of the trip (over 100’F), both in Oregon
• 4 big cities (Seattle, Reno, San Francisco, Portland)

Alaska, part 2

Kesäkuussa palattuani kuukauden reissulta takaisin Suomeen ehdin olla aloillani pari viikkoa ennen kuin muutin loppukesän suunnitelmia ja ostin uudet lentoliput Seattleen. Elokuussa oli pakko päästä takaisin Alaskaan. Vietin kaksi viikkoa ilman mitään suunnitelmia. Kiipesin vuorelle, näin vanhoja ystäviä, tutustuin uusiin ihmisiin, olin talovahtina, ulkoilutin muiden koiria, marjastin, olin veneilemässä, telttailemassa, skeittasin, uin ja nautin kesästä ja Alaskan maisemista ehkä enemmän kuin koskaan aiemmin. Lähtiessä ystäväni vei minut kentälle ja itkin lohduttomasti. Olin elänyt elämäni parasta aikaa.

In June, after returning to Finland from a month-long trip, I was laying low for a couple of weeks, before changing my plans for later in the summer. I had to go back to Alaska in August. I spent two weeks without any plans. I climbed up a mountain, saw some old friends, made a bunch of new friends, housesat, walked dogs, went berry picking, boating, camping, skateboarding, swimming and thoroughly enjoyed summer and Alaska more than ever before. As I left, my friend dropped me off at the airport and I cried inconsolably. I had lived some of the best moments of my life.

Oregon

Vietettyäni pari aika railakasta viikkoa Alaskassa, lepäsin Seattlessa ystävieni luona muutaman päivän. Alaskan ystäväni Kari vei minut Seattlen yöelämään ja lopulta lähdin hänen ja toisen Alaskan ystäväni kyydissä alas Portlandiin, jossa kävimme tyttöporukalla katsomassa Wilcon konsertin. Portlandissa tälläsin ystäväni Paulin kanssa, jonka kanssa kolusimme Oregonin parhaita paloja teltan kanssa vielä viikon verran. Ajelin yksinäni pickupissa Crater Lakelle jo toista kertaa tänä vuonna, ja kun uimalaituri oli kesäkauden päätteeksi suljettu, päädyin uimaan läheiseen vesiputoukseen. Oregon on nyt virallisesti vienyt toisen sijan sydämestäni heti Alaskan jälkeen.

After spending a couple of intense weeks in Alaska, I relaxed at my friends’ house in Seattle for some days. My Alaskan friend Kari showed my some of Seattle’s best nightlife and finally I got a ride with her and another friend from Alaska down to Portland, OR, where we all saw Wilco in concert. In Portland I also met up with my friend Paul, with whom we drove around the best places in Oregon for a week with a tent. I also drove down to Crater Lake by myself, for the second time this year, and as their swimming spot had already closed, I ended up swimming in a nearby waterfall. Oregon has now officially taken the second place in my heart after Alaska.

Back to the West Coast

Syyskuussa ehdin olla kotona kolmisen päivää, ennen kuin Lentodiileihin pamahti aivan liian hyvä tarjous. Ostin lennot Los Angelesiin 330 eurolla. Marraskuun ensimmäisinä päivinä lensin siis Losiin muutaman vuoden tauon jälkeen. Näin Kalifornian tätiäni ja serkkuani ja tapasin ystävääni Los Felizissä. Sieltä matka jatkui pikaisen pyrähdyksen jälkeen Seattleen viikonlopuksi. Seattlessa vietin aikaa Karin luona Capitol Hillissä, kävimme kaupungilla, söimme ja kävimme Seattlen skandinaavimyyjäisissä. Sunnuntaina jatkoin taas matkaani lentäen kohti Portlandia. Sieltä minut haki ystäväni Paul, ja ajelimme alas Oregonin läpi Kalifornian puolelle jossa halusimme käydä halailemassa punapuita. Vaalien tulos järkytti, mutta lohtua toi Eugenessa nähty Neko Casen konsertti. Matkani jatkui vielä viikonlopuksi takaisin Losiin. Enkelten kaupunki näytti hyvät ja huonot puolensa, mutta lopuksi oli ihan mukava lähteä kotimatkalle kohti lumista Suomea.

In September I was home for three days, before there was an offer too good to just pass by. I got flights to Los Angeles through Stockholm for about 350 dollars. During the first days of November, I flew to LA after not having been back there in a few years. I saw my Californian aunt and cousin and met up with my friend in Los Feliz. From there the trip continued onto Seattle for the weekend. In Seattle I spent time at my friend Kari’s house in Capitol Hill, we meandered around town, ate and went to Seattle’s Scandinavian fair. On Sunday I continued down to Portland by plane. I got picked up at PDX by my friend Paul and together we drove down through Oregon to California, where we wanted to hug some redwoods. The result of the election was shocking, but I was consoled by seeing Neko Case in concert in Eugene. I still had one more weekend to spend in LA. The City of Angels showed me some of its best and its worst, but finally I was happy to head back to snowy Finland.

Nyt odottelen että seuraava matka ilmestyy horisonttiin. Kaikenlaista on ilmassa – pysykää kuulolla!
