Kierrättäminen ja ekologisuus ovat minulle tärkeitä asioita. Matkoilla ja luonnossa liikkuessa näkee harvinaisen hyvin kuinka jäte, muovi ja kertakäyttöiset esineet valtaavat maailmaa. Omasta puolestani pyrin kuluttamaan mahdollisimman järkevästi ja ostamaan vain sellaista jota tiedän käyttäväni, sekä ruoan että vaatteiden suhteen. Lisäksi pyrin välttämään turhaa shoppailua ja huonolaatuisia vaatteita. Aina en kuitenkaan ole ollut näin valveutunut, ja viime vuosina olen oppinut tuntemaan omat kulutustottumukseni ja käyttötarpeeni paremmin. Nykyään ostan vaatteita vain jos tiedän käyttäväni niitä ja pyrin tukemaan yrityksiä joiden tiedän toimivan vastuullisesti.

Recycling and being ecological are important issues for me. While traveling it has become very clear to me how garbage, plastic and disposable items are taking over the world. For my part, I try to be a conscious consumer and to only purchase things I know I will use, both in groceries and clothes. I also try to avoid unnecessary shopping and cheap quality clothing. I haven’t however always been this well-informed and int he past few years I have gotten to know my own consumer habits and needs better. Nowadays I will only buy clothes if I know for sure, that I will use them. I also strive to support and prefer companies that I know are acting responsibly.

En ikinä voisi mainostaa tai tukea tuotteita joiden ideologiaan ja toimintaan en uskoisi. Siksi haluankin kertoa teille tarinan siitä, miten jostain kerran käytetystä voi tehdä jotain aivan uutta ja uskomattoman toimivaa.

I could never advertise or support a product that I wouldn’t believe in, both ethically or ideologically. That’s why I’d like to tell you the story of how something once used can be made into something new and incredibly practical.

Meressä lilluu arviolta 750.000 tonnia hylättyjä haamuverkkoja, eli niin kutsuttuja ghost netsejä. Mereen dumppaaminen on monelle kalastajalle edullisin ja helpoin keino hävittää vanhat verkot, mutta ympäristön ja eläimistön kannalta nämä verkot ovat petollisia. Verkkoihin käytetty nailoni hajoaa hitaasti ja usein ne tarttuvat koralliriuttoihin tai muihin eläviin organismeihin, tuhoten kokonaisia ekosysteemejä. Satojatuhansia lintuja, kilpikonnia ja nisäkkäitä kuolee näiden haamuverkkojen takia vuosittain.

There’s an estimated 750.000 tons of abandoned ghost nets in our oceans. Dumping used fishing nets in the ocean is for many fishermen the cheapest and easiest way to get rid of old nets, but these nets are detrimental to the environment and animals. The nylon used for fishing nets breaks down slowly and often the get stuck to coral reefs or other living organisms, destroying entire ecosystems. Hundreds of thousands of birds, turtles and mammals die every year because of these ghost nets.

Ruotsalainen Tretorn on yhteistyössä Partioaitan kanssa ryhtynyt keräämään näitä haamuverkkoja ja kierrättämään niitä parempaa, kestävämpää tarkoitusta varten. Ghost Net Collection käyttää haamuverkoista saatua nailonia uraauurtavia sadetakkeja varten. Rain Jacket from the Sea -parkatakit pitävät sateelta kuivassa ja hengittävät. Tämä takki toimii erinomaisesti myös tuulessa ja raekuurossa, sillä näiden kuvien ottamisen jälkeen sain niskaani rakeita täydeltä taivaalta.

The Swedish company Tretorn has in cooperation with Partioaitta started collecting these ghost nets and recycling them for a better, more useful purpose. Ghost Net Collection uses the nylon extracted from ghost nets to make revolutionary rain jackets. The Rain Jacket from the Sea -parkas keep you dry from the rain and still breathe. This jacket works well also in wind and hail, because just after taking these photos the sky opened we got hailed on like the world was ending.

Kauas on tultu lapsuuden täysmuovisista sadetakeista jotka eivät hengittäneet nimeksikään. Pyrin itse kävelemään arjessani mahdollisimman moneen paikkaan kelillä kuin kelillä, ja tämä takki on tullut elämääni jäädäkseen. Perille päästessä en ole hiestä läpimärkä, mutta materiaali, korkea kaulus ja tilava huppu suojaavat kuitenkin kastumiselta. Samalla tiedän että olen antanut uuden elämän jollekin, joka muuten voisi lillua meressä tuhoamassa kallisarvoista luontoamme.

This jacket is a far cry from the rain jackets I used to have as a child that didn’t breathe one bit. In my daily life I try to walk everywhere, without having to worry about the weather. This jacket has been a godsend. When I arrive at my destination I’m not soaked in sweat, but the material, the high collar and the hood still protect me from the elements. I have also given a new life to something, which would otherwise be floating around in the ocean destroying our precious nature.

Rain Jacket from the Seas -takkien ensimmäinen pilottierä saapuu Partioaittaan 1.4.2017 viidessä eri värissä. Takki on unisex-mallia ja itselläni S-koko mahduttaa alleen myös paksun villapaidan tai kevytuntuvatakin kuten minulla näissä kuvissa.

The pilot series of Rain Jacket from the Seas arrives in Partioaitta stores on April 1st, 2017, in five different colors. The jackets are unisex, my size Small fits a thick sweater or a light down jacket underneath it, as I am wearing in these pictures.

Nämä kuvat napattiin kaksi viikkoa sitten Oregonin John Day Fossil Bedsin kansallismonumentilla, jossa olen saanut kunnian vierailla kolme kertaa viimeisen vuoden sisällä. Blue Basin on todella nimensä veroinen paikka, sen turkoosissa sinessä samoillessa ei aina tiedä olevansa tämän maan päällä.

These pictures were taken two weeks ago at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon, that I’ve had the honor to visit three times within the past year. Blue Basin is truly worth its name, you don’t always realize you’re on this earth while meandering across its turquoise blue rock formations.
