Lake Tahoe merkitsee washon intiaanikielellä taivaan järveä. Ja niin upea on tämä järvi, että sinne saapuessa tuntuu melkein siltä kuin taivaaseen olisi päässyt. Olimme ajaneet aamulla Lassenista Renoon, käyneet ostoksilla muutamassa outletissa ja hakeneet Nevadan pääkaupunki Carson Citysta eväitä illaksi. Tahoelle ajoimme Nevadan puolelta ylämäkeen vuorten välistä. Yhtäkkiä ilmaantui tämä jättiläismäinen järvi. Niin kaunis – ja niin nimensä veroinen!

In Native American Washo, Lake Tahoe means Lake of the Sky. In fact, this lake is so fabulous, that arriving there almost almost feels like going to heaven. In the morning we had driven from Lassen to Reno, done some outlet shopping there and gotten some snacks for the evening in the state capital, Carson City. We drove over to Tahoe through the mountains. Suddenly this enormous lake appeared. So incredibly beautiful – and so worthy of its name!

Olin varannut meille telttapaikan Nevada Beach Campgroundilta, joka osoittautuikin niin hyväksi paikaksi, että kuulemma sitä oltiin jo iltapäivän mittaan käyty useamman kerran kärkkymässä. I had made a reservation for us at Nevada Beach Campground, which turned out to be such a great location, that several people had apparently been eyeing it during the afternoon. Fortunately the post had our reservation on it and we got to drive our car almost to the beach. We could literally walk directly from our tent onto the sand.

Nevada Beach Campground sijaitsee aivan kahden osavaltion rajan tuntumassa. Koko järvikin on kahden eri osavaltion puolella, niin että Kalifornialle jää niistä hieman isompi osio.

Nevada Beach Campground is located right by the state line and the lake is actually split between two states, while California gets the bigger half.

Hiekka oli hieman karkeahkoa, mutta silti fiilis oli kuin tropiikissa, eikä vuoristossa.

The sand was a bit coarse, but still I felt like being in the tropics, not the mountains.

Memorial Dayn fiilis oli huipussaan. Meillä oli valkoviiniä jäissä, eväitä tulelle ja leiri oli pystytetty.

Our Memorial Day was grand. We had some white wine on ice, snacks for the fire, and we had set up camp.

The sunset at the end of a hot day was absolutely gorgeous.

Riehuimme, juoksimme ja hyppelimme rannalla niin, että jalkapohjat olivat koetuksella. Pimeyden laskeuduttua taivaalle ilmestyi taas tähdet. Ah, näitä tähtiä ja tätä Amerikan suurta taivasta voisin katsoa loputtomiin.

We ran, cavorted and jumped around on the beach until the soles of our feet were completely sore. After dark all those millions of stars appeared again. Oh, I could look at the stars and the vast American skies forever.
