“Why go to Thailand, when you can go to Tahoe?”

Ystäväni Alaskasta oli vinkannut minulle paikasta jossa Tahoella pitäisi ehdottomasti käydä. Pari alaskalaista ystävääni opiskeli nimittäin Renossa, josta he tapasivat ajaa Tahoelle viettämään vapaa-aikaa lumen ja veden äärellä. Järven koillisosissa lymyilee tämä salaranta, Hidden Beach, jota ystäväni kehui muistuttavan häntä Thaimaasta. Tämä riitti minulle myyntipuheeksi, joten aamiaisen jälkeen tänä toukokuisena tiistai-aamuna lähdimme ajamaan.

My friend from Alaska had tipped me about a place absolutely worth visiting at Tahoe. A few of my Alaskan friends incidentally went to college in Reno and always used to drive down to Tahoe in their spare time, to enjoy snow and lake water. Tucked in the northeast corner of the lake, is a secret, yet public, Hidden Beach, which my friend said reminded him of Thailand. This was enough of a sales pitch for me, so after breakfast on a Tuesday morning we took off.

Pysäköimme auton tien varteen ja lähdimme kävelemään tien laitaa pitkin kohti tätä salaista rantaa. Emme tarkalleen tienneet mistä kohtaa polku lähtisi alas rannalle, mutta rupesin juttelemaan edellä kulkevan herran ja hänen äitinsä kanssa ja kysyin josko saisimme seurata heitä mestoille. Mies kertoi innokkaana olevansa kotoisin Tahoelta, mutta asuvansa nykyään San Franin lähellä ja käyvänsä säännöllisesti äitinsä luona kylässä. Hekin olivat menossa Hidden Beachille viettämään aurinkoista päivää.

We parked our car on the side of the road and started walking down towards this secret beach. We didn’t know exactly where the path would veer off toward the beach, but I started chatting with a man and his mother ahead of us and asked if we could tag along. The man told us eagerly that he actually hailed from Tahoe, but now lived in the Bay Area and that he’d regularly visit his mother here. They were also headed to Hidden Beach to spend this sunny day by the water.

Ja oikeassahan ystäväni oli. Puiden lomasta avautuva näkymä oli uskomaton. Vesi oli turkoosia ja kivet olivat hassun mallisia, paikka muistutti minua käsittämättömän paljon Similanin saarista Thaimaassa. Erona voisin mainita sen, että valitettavasti Thaimaan vedet ovat mahdottoman likaisia tähän kirkastakin kirkkaampaan järviveteen verrattuna. Ja tietenkin tämä vesi on hieman kylmempää.

And my friend was right. The view opening up from among the trees was incredible. The water was turquoise and the rocks had funny shapes, the place reminded me uncannily of the Similan Islands in Thailand. The biggest difference is, that unfortunately the waters in Thailand are desperately filthy compared to this pristinely clear lake water. And of course this water is a wee bit colder.

Vedessä ilakointimme houkutteli luoksemme pari koiraa. Suurehko karkeakarvainen saksanseisoja ui rohkeasti Reettaa pelastamaan. Lopulta se kiipesi kivelle, ja katselin etsimen läpi haltioituneena näitä tyyppejä ja tätä maisemaa.

Our frolicking in the water invited a few dogs to join us. A large German Wirehaired Pointer swam boldly up to save Reetta from the depths. Finally it climbed up on a rock and marveled by these views and these dudes, I captured it all through my viewfinder.

Siiri and I got better acquainted with the friendly Doberman, who awaited its companion closer to shore.

Olimme nyt muutaman päivän sisällä nähneet Yhdysvaltojen pari syvintä järveä, sillä Lake Tahoe on Crater Laken jälkeen maan toiseksi syvin järvi. Jännittävää kyllä, vuorten ja lumen läheisyydestä huolimatta, tämä järvi ei talvellakaankoskaan jäädy. Tahoeta suojelee aktiivinen ympäristöjärjestö, Keep Tahoe Blue, joka on mm. vastustanut suurten teiden rakentamista järven lähelle, ja hyvä niin.

Within just a few days we had seen the two deepest freshwater lakes in the United States, since Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake after Crater Lake. Interestingly enough, despite the proximity of mountains and snow, this lake never freezes, even in winter. Tahoe is protected by an active environmental organization, Keep Tahoe Blue, which has aptly opposed building large highways by the lake.

Tämä järvi on ehdottomasti aktiivisen luonnonystävän paratiisi. Toivon pääseväni siellä käymään pian uudestaan. Kajakointi näissä vesissä olisi poikaa.

This lake is a definite paradise for an active nature-lover. I hope to get to visit soon again. Kayaking in these waters would be another dream come true.
