Edellisellä Kalifornian reissulla Mono Lake jäi näkemättä Yosemiten lähellä jylläävien metsäpalojen vuoksi. Tuolloin tie 120 Yosemitesta läpi Tioga Passin oli tovin kiinni. Viime keväänä kuitenkin tärppäsi ja pääsimme ensin Mono Lakelle ja sieltä läpi Yosemiteen. Yövyimme Mammoth Lakesin kylässä motellissa, sillä intensiivisen telttailun ja kylpemisen jälkeen piti päästä pesulle ja pyykkäämään. Illaksi ajoimme Mono Lakelle katsomaan auringonlaskua.

On my previous trip to California we missed out on seeing Mono Lake due to the forest fires ravaging the area around Yosemite. Back then, highway 120 was closed for a while. Last summer we however got lucky and we got to visit Mono Lake first and then drive over to Yosemite. We spent the night in a motel in Mammoth Lakes, since we had to get cleaned up after some intense camping and bathing. That evening we drove to Mono Lake to see the sunset.

Lee Viningin läheltä löysimme reitin South Tufan alueelle näkemään järven ja nämä kalkkikivimuodostelmat. Järvi on ollut olemassa ainakin 750 000 vuotta ja on äärimmäisen suolapitoinen.

Close to Lee Vining we found the way to the South Tufa area to see the lake and these limestone formations. The lake has been around for at least 750.000 years and has an extremely high salt content.

Auringonlaskun aika tarjosi järven näkemiseen parhaan mahdollisen valon. Valon kajo oli erilainen eri suuntiin katsoessa.

The setting sun offered the best possible light for seeing the lake. The light appeared different while looking in different directions.

Järven rannalla kalkkikivinen maa oli paikoin mutainen ja kostea. Kivillä hyppely oli illan päätteeksi viihdyttävää ja Reetta halusi vangita liikkeen kuviin.

The limestone on lakeshore was partly wet and muddy. Leaping on the rocks was a fun evening activity and Reetta wanted to capture the movement in pictures.

Auringon laskettua ilta pimeni äkkiä. Hyvä ettemme eksyneet matkalla takaisin parkkipaikalle. Palasimme Mammoth Lakesiin, söimme ahneesti pitsaa ja yritimme nukkua edes muutaman tunnin ennen seuraavan päivän varhaista herätystä. Odotimme innokkaina näkevämme Yosemiten kansallispuiston. After sunset the evening quickly got dark. Good thing we didn’t get lost on our way back to the parking area. We returned to Mammoth Lake, ate some much needed pizza and tried to get some sleep before getting up early the next day. We were very eager to get to see the beautiful Yosemite National Park the next day. Stay tuned!
