Edellisellä kerralla vieraillessani Yosemitessa kävimme ensitekijöiksi tutustumassa puiston eteläpuolella sijaitsevaan Mariposa Groveen, josta löytyvät tämän alueen hienoimmat ja suurimmat mammuttipetäjät. Mariposa Grove on kuitenkin ollut toissa vuodesta asti peruskorjattavana, ja ainoaksi järkeväksi vaihtoehdoksi Tioga Roadia pitkin saapuessa oli pysähtyä pienemmällä Tuolumne Grovella. Entisaikaan kulku Yosemiteen kulki Tuolumne Groven läpi kulkevan hiekkatien kautta. Reitti ensimmäisille mammuttipetäjille on noin mailin patikan takana. Menomatkalla tie oli helppokulkuinen alamäkeen, mutta ylös tullessa alkoi hiki jo puskea. Päivä oli lämpenemässä toden teolla.

During my previous trip to Yosemite we started off by visiting Mariposa Grove on the south end of the park, which is probably home to the biggest and most impressive giant sequoias. Mariposa Grove has however been under restoration since the year before last and the only reasonable option when arriving through Tioga Road, was to visit to vist the smaller Tuolumne Grove instead. In the olden times people had to use the dirt road through Tuolumne Grove when traveling to Yosemite. The hike to the first giant sequoias is about a mile’s hike down the hill. On the way down it was a fairly easy hike, but coming back up again we actually had to break a sweat. The day was really starting to warm up.

Näitä puita ja niiden massiivista kokoa on lähes mahdoton tallentaa kameralle. Ne täytyy kokea läheltä. Ehkä ainoa keino ymmärtää niiden todellinen koko kuvia katsoessa, on verrata niitä muihin ympäröiviin puihin.

These trees and their massive size is almost impossible to capture on camera. They have to be experienced up close. Maybe the only way comprehend their size through pictures, is by comparing them to the surrounding trees.

Näiden puiden elinehto ovat kummallista kyllä, metsäpalot, sillä jättimäisten puiden kääpiömäiset kävyt eivät aukea ja pääse levittämään siemeniään ilman metsäpalojen mukanaan tuomaa kuumuutta. Joskus jokin niistä joutuu kärsimään ja kuolemaan, jotta uudemman polven siemenet pääsisivät alulle.

Interestingly enough, the lifeline for these trees are forest fires, since the tiny little cones of these gigantic trees will not open and disperse without the heat brought on by the forest fires. Sometimes some of them have to suffer and burn, so that newer generations of seeds will get to disperse and grow.
