Punapuiden suvusta on jäljellä enää muutama lajike. Mammuttipetäjät pitävät majaa Yosemiten ja Kings Canyonin ympäristössä, jättiläispunapuut rannikolla San Franciscon pohjoispuolella ja Kiinasta löytyy hieman pienempiä kiinanpunapuita. There are only a few varieties left of the redwood tree subfamily. Giant Sequoias can be found in the areas surrounding Yosemite and King’s Canyon, Coastal Redwood north of San Francisco and a smaller variety called Dawn Redwood over in China. Giant Sequoias are the largest species by volume of them all, but unfortunately they are quite rare nowadays. Along Avenue of the Giants, running through Humboldt State Park, you will see the most abundant array of redwoods in their nearly natural habitat.

You can start your tour of the redwoods at the Chandelier Tree in Leggett, which you can still drive through by car. This 2400-year old tree has seen life for quite a while. Somehow it has managed to survive as a tourist destination for longer than many other of the drive-through trees.

Varsinaiselle Avenue of the Giantsille poikkesimme Mirandan kylän kohdalta. Puistotien varressa kulkee lähes koko matkan myös suurempi moottoritie. Jos ei kuitenkaan ole kiire, kannattaa ehdottomasti ajaa maisemareittiä punapuiden katveessa. Vasta täällä niiden koon ymmärtää kunnolla.

We entered the actual Avenue of the Giants by the town of Miranda. There is an actual freeway running along the scenic route nearly the whole way. But if you aren’t in a hurry, you should definitely get the scenic views among the redwoods. Here you’ll finally grasp their true size.

Before they couldn’t really appreciate their uniqueness properly and they were cut down in masses. There are only a few spots left in Northern California where they occur naturally.
