Siitä on pian kymmenen vuotta kun ihastuin Oregonin rannikkoon. Se oli rakkautta ensisilmäyksellä kun iskin silmäni rannikon valkoseinäisiin majakoihin ja jylhiin kallioihin. Oregonissa pääsee myös näkemään merileijonia, meritähtiä ja muuta rannikolla viihtyvää eläimistöä. Majakoita on niin monia, että jokainen löytänee niistä sen oman suosikkinsa.

It’s nearly ten years since I fell in love with the Oregon Coast. It was love at first sight, when I laid my eyes on the white lighthouses and rugged coastlines. The Oregon Coast is also a great place to see sea lions, starfish and all kinds of animals living by the water. There are so many lighthouses that everyone will probably find their favorite one right here.

Coquille River Light lähellä Bandonia oli minulle uusi tuttavuus. Sen parkkipaikalla meitä odotti vanha vaihto-oppilasaikainen ystäväni Paul, jonka kanssa olin viesteillyt näkemisestä jo useamman viikon. Kävimme majakassa sisällä, jossa majakanvartija kertoi meille käyneensä Kemissä, Suomessa, jossa hänen tyttärensä oli ollut vaihto-oppilaana. Joskus maailman pienuus todella yllättää.

Coquille River Light close to Bandon was new to me. In the parking lot in front of the lighthouse, we were greeted by my old friend Paul from my exchange student days, who I’d messaged about meeting up several weeks before. In the lighthouse, the keeper told us that they had visited their daughter in Kemi, Finland, where she had been an exchange student. The world is so small sometimes.

Lähdimme yhteistuumin Bandoniin syömässä fish & chipsejä, jonka jälkeen Paul joutui lähtemään jatkamaan matkaansa. Sovimme kuitenkin tapaavamme vielä Portlandissa parin päivän päästä.

Together we drove over to Bandon to eat some fish & chips. Afterwards Paul had to unfortunately be on his way. However we still agreed to meet up in Portland a couple days later.

Paul lähti ajamaan kohti sisämaata ja me jatkoimme matkaamme pohjoiseen rannikkoa pitkin. Halusimme nähdä merileijonia ja vihdoin pysähdyttyämme eräälle näköalapaikalle kantautui niiden metelöinti parkkipaikalle asti.

Paul headed back towards Eugene and we continued our trip up north along the coast. We wanted to see sea lions and finally, as we pulled over at a lookout point, we could hear them making a ruckus in the parking lot.

Merileijonat nauttivat lämpimästä kesäpäivästä rantakallioilla. Eräs tumma yksilö erottui joukosta suu auki haukkuen.

The sea lions were enjoying the warm summery day on the shore. One dark individual was barking loudly.

Toinen minulle uusi majakka siinsi kaukaisuudessa. Cape Arago Light sijaitsee saarella, eikä sinne ihan helpolla pääse. Läheisestä Coos Baysta poimimme vielä mukaamme polttopuita iltaista leirinuotiota varten. Myyjä oli mielenkiintoinen norjalaista syntyperää tunnustava setä, joka kantoi kiltisti klapit meille autoon saakka ja kertoili perheensä historiikkia.

We could see another lighthouse in the distance. Cape Arago Light is located on an island and isn’t that easily accessible. From the nearby Coos Bay we picked up some firewood for our campfire that evening. The seller was an interesting dude of Norwegian heritage, who was nice enough to carry the firewood all the way to our car and tell us about his family history.
