Kesä lähestyy loppuaan. Mieleni on jonkin verran haikea, mutta minulla on vielä lomaa jäljellä, joten epätoivoon en ole vaipumassa. Epätoivoa aiheuttaa sen sijaan tilanne maailmalla; ihmisoikeuksien sortaminen, ydinsodan uhat ja jatkuva väkivalta ja silmitön viha saavat minut mietteliääksi siitä mitä tuleman pitää. Kuinka syvälle meidän ihmisyyden pitää vajota, ennen kuin riittää? Vastareaktiona kaikelle pahuudelle haluan ainakin itse antaa hyvää, uskoa hyvään ja olla hyvä. Viha on sana ja konsepti jota ei tarvitse viljellä. Ymmärrys on paljon voimakkaampaa.

Heinäkuussa pääsin vihdoin toteuttamaan haaveeni uida Crater Lakessa. Viime vuonna järvellä vieraillessa tilaisuudet menivät sään ja olosuhteiden vuoksi ohi, mutta nyt vihdoin hyppäsin kallioilta jääkylmän veden syvyyksiin. Ilokseni voin kertoa, että taidan olla palaamassa paikalle vielä toisenkin kerran muutaman viikon päästä. Sitä odottaessa, tässä pieni pätkä hypystäni jääkylmään veteen…

This summer is nearing its end. I feel wistful, but I still have some leave coming up, so I shouldn’t despair. However, desperate is how the situation in the world is making me feel; the oppression of human rights, the threat of nuclear war and constant violence and blind hate make me pensive about what the future holds. How far into the abyss does humanity have to sink, until it’s finally enough? As a backlash to all evil, I would like to exude goodness, believe in good and be kind. Hate is a word and a concept that doesn’t need spreading. Understanding is so much more powerful.

In July I finally got to realize my wish to swim in Crater Lake. Last year as I visited the lake my chances were slim due to weather and circumstance, but now I finally got to jump off the cliffs into the deep water. And I’m happy to report that I might be going back a second time in a couple of weeks. Until then, here’s a little clip of my jump into the ice cold waters of Crater Lake…
