Rakastan Losia. Mitä muuta voin sanoa? Kaupunki on iso, täynnä ihmisiä, nähtävyyksiä, katuja, ruuhkia ja näkymiä. Monet pitävät kaupunkia rumana, vaikeana käsittää ja liian levällään olevana. Oman kokemuksen perusteella on pakko sanoa, että kunhan tietää välttää tiettyjä reittejä tiettyyn aikaan selviää selvästi vähemmällä.

I love LA. What else can I say? The city is huge, full of people, sights, streets, traffic and views. Many consider the city to be ugly, difficult to grasp and too spread out. Based on my experience I have to say that as long as you know how to avoid certain routes at certain times you’ll manage with a lot less gray hairs.

Ehkä parasta Losissa on palmut. Niitä on paljon, joka puolella ja huhun mukaan ne on kaikki alunperin tuotu Havaijilta. Ihan sama, minusta ne luovat juuri oikeanlaista tunnelmaa.

Maybe the best thing in LA are the palm trees. They are aplenty, everywhere and according to the rumor, they’re all originally from Hawaii. I don’t really care, I think they look just right.

Toinen juttu, joka yleensä yllättää matkailijat on se, että Losi on täynnä suhteellisen matalia rakennuksia. Vain muutama korkea rakennus kohoaa ylitse muiden, suurimpina rykelminä näistä ovat Downtown ja Century City. Tämä tekee tietenkin myös sen, että palmutkin erottaa kaukaa lähes koko kaupungissa.

Another thing, which usually surprises visitors, is that LA is filled with relatively low buildings. Only a few tall buildings rise above the others, the largest clusters of them being Downtown and Century City. This is of course the reason that you can see the palm trees from a distance in nearly the entire city.

Katutaide ja seinämaalaukset tekevät kaupungista omaleimaisen. Kadut ovat värikkäitä, täynnä yksityiskohtia ja kannanottoja. Tämä löytyy monien reitin varrelta, aivan Hollywoodin sydämestä.

Street art and murals make the city distinctive. The streets are colorful, full of details and statements. This mural can be found on the street, right in the heart of Hollywood.

Henkilökohtaisesti nautin autolla ajamisesta Losissa. Ainakin silloin kun en istu ruuhkassa. Kaupunkilaiset tietävät, että moottoriteitä kuuluu välttää tiettyinä aikoina, ja joitakin teitä kokonaan jos vain mahdollista (kirosana nimeltä 405). Downtownin läpi on kiva ajaa moottoritietä pitkin aamupäivällä, kuten me tässä.

Personally I like driving in this city. At least when not sitting in traffic. The locals know that you should avoid freeways at all costs during certain hours and some freeways altogether if possible (the curse word known as 405). It’s nice to drive along the freeway in Downtown after morning traffic, as we are here.

Santa Monicassa yhdistyvät meri, ranta, moottoritie, ostoskadut ja palmut kiehtovalla tavalla. Harvoissa paikoissa moottoritien rakentamisessa on onnistuttu näin hyvin. Muutenkin Santa Monica on ihana. Rauhallinen ja turvallisen tuntuinen. Ihan eri maata kuin naapurinsa Venice, jossa on toki oma viehätyksensä.

Santa Monica combines the ocean, the beach, the highway, shopping and palm trees in a fascinating way. Few places have succeeded in building a highway this well. Santa Monica is wonderful in other ways too. Calm and seemingly safe. So different from its neighbor Venice, which of course has its own charm.

Santa Monican place to be on ehdottomasti Santa Monica Pier. Auringonlasku sieltä katsottuna on liki maaginen. Laiturilla pyörivät huvipuistolaitteet, aaltojen kohina ja ruokaständien herkulliset tuoksut sekoittuvat kokonaisvaltaiseksi kokemukseksi.

The place to be in Santa Monica is definitely the Santa Monica Pier. The sunset seen from there is nearly magical. The sounds from the amusement park, the waves crashing and the delicious aromas of the food stands blend to form an exquisite experience.

Ocean Avenuen ja Colorado Boulevardin kulmasta löytyy Santa Monican valomainos. Se on alunperin vuodelta 1941, ja on tyylillisesti aivan hurmaava.

On the corner of Ocean Avenue and Colorado Boulevard you will find the Santa Monica neon sign. It’s originally from 1941 and is absolutely charming.

Venice Beachin suosituin hengauspaikka turistikrääsäpitoisen rantabulevardin lisäksi on rannalla oleva skeittiparkki. Täällä jos missä tuntee olevansa vapaa. Ainakin skeitatessa.

The most popular place to hang out in Venice Beach, along with the extremely touristic beach boardwalk, is the skatepark. Here if anywhere can you feel free. At least when skateboarding.

Venice-kyltti katujen Pacific ja Windward kulmassa on ikoninen, ja lukuisten instagram-kuvien kohde. Kyltti palasi alkuperäiselle paikalleen liki sadan vuoden jälkeen vuonna 2007.

The Venice-sign on the corner of Pacific and Windward is iconic and the subject of countless instagram pics. The sign returned to its original location after nearly a century in 2007.

Ne kuuluisat kanaalit löytyvät Venicen rannalta hieman sisämaahan päin. Täällä on kuvattu lukuisia elokuvia ja TV-sarjoja ja paikalla tulee ehdottomasti sellainen tunne, että olisi Euroopassa.

The famous Venice Canals are located a bit inland from Venice Beach. Here they have filmed countless movies and TV-shows. This is one of the places where you definitely feel like being in Europe.

Yksi uudemmista trendialueista on Hollywoodin itäpuolella sijaitseva Silverlake, josta löytyy kivoja pieniä kauppoja ja ravintoloita. Oikeastaan alla näkyvä Echo Park on jo se seuraava in-paikka, jonne hipsterit nyt suuntaavat.

One of those newer hip areas is Silverlake, which lies east of Hollywood. Silverlake offers plenty of little stores and quaint restaurants. Actually the nearby Echo Park, as seen below, is the next up and coming hipster hangout.

Echo Parkin puisto, tekolampi ja suihkulähde on vastikään kunnostettu. Alue oli pitkään huonossa kunnossa, mutta nyt lammessa pyörivät värikkäät polkuveneet ja nurmialueilla on viikonloppuisin perhepiknikkejä.

Echo Park, the pond and the fountain have recently been revamped. The area was decaying for a long time, but now there are colorful paddle boats in the pond and the lawn is host to family picnics during the weekends.

Downtownin Walt Disney Concert Hall on vaikuttava näky. Sen aaltoileva pinta välkehtii auringossa.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown is an impressive sight. Its ondulating surface gleams in the sun.

Downtown on paikka, joka yllättää positiivisesti joka kerta. 20–30 -luvuilla kulta-aikaansa elänyt Downtown on hiljalleen muodostunut nähtävyydeksi. Jaksan edelleen jankuttaa, että katsokaa 500 Days of Summer, niin ymmärrätte miksi.

Downtown is a place, which surprises me every time. The golden era of this area was back in the 20’s and 30’s, but slowly it has become a place of interest. I still keep telling people to see the movie 500 Days of Summer to find out why.

Parasta Losin moottoriteillä ajamisessa on sieltä täältä pilkottavat korkeat palmut. Lisäksi auringonlaskun näkee iltaisin erityisen hyvin, sillä korkeat rakennukset eivät blokkaa näkymää.

The best part about driving on the freeways in LA are the tall palm trees here and there. At night time you get an awesome view of the sunset, because there are no tall buildings to block the view.

Hillseiltä ja Griffith Parkista auringonlaskun näkee kuitenkin parhaiten. Aurinko värjää kaupungin taivaan pastellivärein.

The Hollywood Hills and Griffith Park are however the best place to see the sunset. The sun dyes the skyline in beautiful pastel colors.

Pikkuhiljaa aurinko putoaa Hillsien taakse ja pimeys laskeutuu. Odottaessa voi vaikka loikkia Hollywood-kyltin edustalla.

Slowly the sun sets behind the Hills and darkness ensues. While you wait, you can always leap infront of the Hollywood Sign.

Griffith Observatoriolta näkee pimeällä kaupungin koko komeuden. Täällä pääsee kokemaan valon ja pimeyden kohtaamisen sekä kaupungin valomeressä, että tähtitaivaalla.

From the Griffith Observatory you can see all of the majestic city. Here you can truly see where darkness and light meets, both in the city’s sea of lights and the starry skies.

Koreatownin pimeyttä kirkastavat koreankieliset valomainokset. Tänne kannattaa suunnata illalliselle korealaista barbecueta varten.
