Pohjois-Kalifornian kenties tunnetuin vuori on varmasti tämä. Mount Shastan olin nähnyt monta kertaa lentokoneella yli lentäessäni, mutta vasta viime vuonna pääsin kokemaan tämän massiivisen tulivuoren lumoavan ympäristön. Alue on legendaarinen muun muassa siitä, että siellä on kuvattu 80-luvun klassikkoelokuvaa “Stand by Me”. Muistattehan unohtumattoman kohtauksen rautatiesillalta?

The most famous mountain in Northern California is definitely this one. I’d seen Mount Shasta several times before while passing by on a plane, but finally last year I got to experience the spellbinding presence of this massive volcano up close. The area is famous for being the the filming location of the legendary 80’s movie Stand by Me. You remember that unforgettable scene on the railroad bridge?

Alue on mielestäni Kalifornian kauneimpia. Ihmisiä ei ole liiaksi ja horisontissa siintää aina tulivuori tai pari. Lassen Peakin ja Mount Shastan huiput lymysivät jatkuvasti sivupeilissä tietä ajellessa. Shastan huippu on oikeastaan kaksijakoinen, sillä sen matalampi lumettomampi puolisko kulkee nimellä Shastina, eli Pikku-Shasta.

This area is in my opinion one of the most beautiful in California. There aren’t that many people and there is always a volcano or two on the horizon. Lassen Peak or Mount Shasta were pretty much always in the rear view mirror while driving. Shasta’s peak is actually split into two, the lower one is called Shastina, aka. Little Shasta.

Saavuimme Mount Shastan pieneen kaupunkiin ja pysäköimme auton. Kadun toisella puolen oli ihana seinämaalaus, jota pysähdyimme ihastelemaan. Selvisi, että seinämaalauksen takana oli myös The Fifth Season -nimeä kantava ulkoilutarvikekauppa, jonne oli tietenkin pakko mennä käymään. Kaupassa ystävystyimme heti henkilökunnan kanssa, ja saimmekin oivia vinkkejä alueen tutkailuun. Meitä kiinnostivat erityisesti kuumat lähteet, joita tiesin alueella olevan.

We arrived in the small town of Mount Shasta and parked the car. On the other side of the street there was a wonderful mural, which we stopped to admire. Actually, as it turned out, there was an outdoor store behind the mural called The Fifth Season, which we of course had to visit. In the store we quickly made friends with the personnel and we got some great tips for exploring the surroundings. We were especially interested in some hot springs, which I knew there were close by.

Meille kerrottiin kuumien lähteiden sijaitsevan Big Bendin kylässä. Laitoimme Big Bend, CA navigaattoriin ja lähdimme ajamaan. Tie oli erittäin mutkainen ja tuntui kestävän lähes ikuisuuden. Kylässä ajelimme polkuja ja hiekkateitä edes takaisin löytämättä kuitenkaan yhtään mitään kuumiin lähteisiin viittaavaa. Lopulta bongasimme Hot Springs Roadin. Tie oli kuitenkin suljettu ja uhkaukset yksityisalueella “trespassingista” olivat tarpeeksi säikäyttääksemme meidät pois. Ja ei kun toiset 50 mailia mutkikasta tietä takaisin. Sen pituinen se. Tästä voisi sanoa, että tulipahan käytyä!

We were told the hot springs were located in the town of Big Bend. So we put Big Bend, CA into our navigator and took off. The road was extremely windy and felt like it lasted forever. After arriving, we drove around back streets and dirt roads, without finding anything related to any hot springs. Finally we spotted Hot Springs Road. The road was closed off and there were enough signs warning us of trespassing on private land to scare us off. And so we drove another 50 miles back on the extremely windy road. And that was it. At least we went out looking, is all I can say about that!
